Building Yorkshire Blinds' Online Shop

About the Project

Yorkshire Blinds is a family-run business where Shane and his wife manufacture and sell made-to-measure blinds across Yorkshire. With 40 years of experience and a perfect 5-star rating, they'd taken down their old website because it simply wasn't working anymore. They needed an e-commerce platform that could sell blinds online and serve customers from their 20s to their 80s with equal ease.

Key problems:

Yorkshire Blinds had expertise and reputation, but no way to show it online:

  • The old website had stopped being useful, so they'd taken it down entirely — leaving them invisible to anyone searching for blinds online.
  • Without e-commerce, every sale required a home visit for measuring and fitting, which became especially tough during the pandemic when people wanted to shop from home.
  • The brand didn't reflect 40 years of craftsmanship and local expertise — nothing that made them stand out from national competitors flooding search results.
  • Competing for "blinds in Yorkshire" meant fighting big national retailers with massive SEO budgets, and they weren't showing up in local searches at all.
  • Their customer base spans from young homeowners in their 20s to retirees in their 80s, meaning the site needed to be genuinely simple — not just "mobile-friendly" but actually easy for everyone.

Our Solution

We built Yorkshire Blinds a platform that puts their family expertise front and centre:

  • Created a brand identity using teal green and warm orange that feels professional but approachable, with a logo and colour palette used consistently across the site, social media, and printed materials.
  • Built a WooCommerce shop, organised three ways: by blind type (roller, venetian, vertical, vision, shutters), by room (living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom), and by colour — so customers can find exactly what they want, however they think about it.
  • Designed a clean homepage that immediately shows what matters: 40 years of experience, a perfect 5-star rating, free fitting in Yorkshire, and Made in England credentials right up front where visitors see them first.
  • Set up SEO foundations with landing pages targeting specific Yorkshire locations (Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York) and blind types, giving them a fighting chance against national competitors in local searches.
  • Made the site work beautifully on every device with simple navigation, large product images, and clear calls-to-action — tested specifically with older users to make sure it wasn't just technically responsive but genuinely easy to use.
  • Integrated the Barclays payment gateway, set up email marketing capture, and added customer testimonials throughout to build trust before people ever pick up the phone.

The result is a site that loads fast, ranks well, and makes buying custom blinds feel straightforward rather than overwhelming.

  • Site achieved GTmetrix Grade A with 99% performance scores: pages load in under one second, meaning customers on slow rural Yorkshire connections aren't left waiting.
  • Customers find specific blinds quickly using room-based browsing ("I need bedroom blinds"), type-based ("I want roller blinds"), or colour filters — whatever makes sense to them.
  • Local SEO landing pages brought in steady traffic from Yorkshire-specific searches, helping them compete with national chains for "blinds near me" queries.
  • The prominent free fitting offer and 40-year experience messaging meant fewer "just browsing" enquiries and more people ready to book measuring appointments.

Final Thoughts

This wasn't just about selling blinds online — it was about keeping a Yorkshire family business alive when everything shifted during the pandemic. Shane and his wife have been making quality blinds for over 40 years, measuring windows by hand, fitting them properly, and standing by their work. When you can't visit people's homes to show samples and take measurements, you need a website that does the next best thing: shows the craftsmanship, builds trust, and makes it dead simple to find what you need. Yorkshire people want local suppliers they can rely on, not faceless national retailers. Now, when someone searches for blinds in their area, Yorkshire Blinds shows up — and when they land on the site, they can see straight away this is a proper Yorkshire business that knows what it's doing.
